About Barb Harrison:
Barb Harrison, a local woman went to Africa last year for her 50th birthday. After much research, she found TAPA (Transform A Person Africa), a charitable organization based in the Kibera slums of Nairobi Africa. She built a relationship with the program director, Johnson G Migwi and has worked with him to make many positive changes at their educational centre. TAPA is set up to address the plight of orphaned and vulnerable children, youth, and women, especially those living with HIV/AIDS. Barb donated $12,000 of her own money and monetary gifts from friends and family for several projects at TAPA but her efforts did not stop there…
Barb has set out on another journey for TAPA, to purchase a sweater machine for $5000 plus materials required to construct school uniforms. This machine would enable uniforms to be made and sold for less money, enabling the children to go to school. The uniforms would be made by people from the Kibera slums and trained through TAPA, thus providing employment. There is also the potential to take on orders for other schools and branch out into various sewing projects providing sustainable employment and wages for individuals from the Kibera slums, as well as funding for TAPA.
It gets better, if we work together to help Barb raise the remaining $2400 in funds required to buy a sweater machine, JJ Hilsinger of Algoma’s Water Tower Inn has agreed to purchase a SECOND machine!
